People with less talent than you are getting paid more. 💸
Sorry to hit you with that on a Sunday.
Creators spend as much time telling themselves lies as they do creating content 👀. So in this week’s issue of Permission To Zoom Out, we’re tackling 3 things you tell yourself that aren’t true and are holding you back.
🎶 Free your mind and the rest will follow.🎶 - En Vogue, 1992
1. “No one saw my content.” 🙈
I’ve been watching the Knicks finally get their act together, and my husband and son went to Madison Square Garden two weeks ago to be a part of this magical run. That place is HUGE. It can hold 19,500 people in the main arena and 5,600 in the theater. Many of you are getting more views on your reels than that, yet you’re still upset with the algorithm.
Instead of obsessing over percentages, think about your real impact. There’s an entire stadium of people watching your content! And if your audience is on the smaller side, just picture the number of people who could fill your school auditorium. Remember those moments from your youth when you were like wow, all these people are here to see me. Guess what? You’re doing that multiple times a day.
2. "I can’t work with brands that don’t have a budget." 🙉
Here’s something I learned long ago that shouldn't have surprised me but did: The people who charge the least are often women with rich husbands. I swear. They’re getting free products, services, and vacations in exchange for content. Now, if landing brand deals is how you pay the bills, I get it. But as I’ve been saying for 10 years at this point: all compensation isn’t monetary.
That conference you’ve been dying to speak at? That dream nursery you want for your next kid? That bucket-list vacation you have on your Pinterest board? These are all things a brand can help you achieve without paying you a cent. Don’t just think of making money to buy things. Ask yourself: Is there a way to get everything I want without spending a dime? Because, honestly, the Rosewood Hotel could pay me in free vacations and I would be totally ok with that.
3. "My house isn’t cute enough to film in." 🙊
I saw this post from Morgan D. where she shared that she almost gave up the whole creator journey because she thought her space wasn’t “cute” enough to film in. No office. No fancy lighting. And she felt like her quiet personality didn’t match the bubbly energy of other creators she saw on her feed. But then, she bought a $40 roll of peel-and-stick wallpaper, set up a small corner, and hit record. That small backdrop helped her land $76k in brand deals in 2024.
If Morgan had waited for perfection, none of that would’ve happened. Listen to Morgan, hit record, and make your money.
